- A stone of calm. Amethyst's energy is described as calm and soothing, helping to quiet a busy mind and ease stress, worry and overthinking.
- A high vibration stone. Its violet colour blends the fire of red with the calm of blue, and violet has long been linked with spirit, wisdom and peace.
- Protection. Amethyst is one of the most loved protection stones. It is believed to wrap a shield around your energy, absorbing negativity and transforming it into calm, loving energy.
- A clear head. Its name comes from the Greek amethystos, meaning "not drunk", which is why people still reach for it to keep a clear head and to help break unhelpful habits.
- Sleep and dreams. Kept by the bed, amethyst is said to settle a racing mind, ease bad dreams and bring more vivid, meaningful ones.

Your third eye
Amethyst is linked with the third eye chakra, between your eyebrows. This energy centre is associated with intuition, insight and inner wisdom, and amethyst is said to help open and balance it.
Your crown chakra
It is also linked with the crown chakra, at the top of your head, said to be your connection to spirit and to a deep sense of peace. That is why amethyst is so loved for meditation.
Your aura
Many healers also work with the aura, the energy field around your body. Amethyst is believed to cleanse it, clearing heavy, stagnant energy and leaving you feeling lighter.
Vibration and intention
Crystal healers believe every crystal holds a steady vibration and that your energy gently tunes to it, a bit like two clocks falling into rhythm. Amethyst's vibration is said to be high and calm. The most important part is intention: hold your amethyst, set a clear intention such as calm, sleep or protection, and its energy is said to focus on exactly what you need.

- Cleanse it. Pass your amethyst through sage or incense smoke, or ring a bell over it, to clear away any energy it has absorbed.
- Set your intention. Hold it in both hands, close your eyes and set one clear intention. Keep it simple, like "I am calm" or "I sleep deeply tonight".
- Breathe in violet light. Breathe slowly. With each breath in, imagine soft violet light flowing from the crystal, up through your body to the crown of your head.
- Rest it on your third eye. Lie back and rest the amethyst between your eyebrows for a few minutes. Just notice what you feel.
- Seal your energy. Picture that violet light wrapping around you like a shield, then keep your amethyst by your bed so its calm energy stays with you all night.
How to tell it's working
Many people feel warmth or a gentle tingle in their hands, sleep more deeply, or have more vivid dreams. You might feel calmer, or notice your gut feelings getting stronger. If your amethyst starts to feel dull or heavy, it is time to cleanse it again. Keep amethyst out of strong, prolonged sunlight, as its purple colour can fade.
Tradition, not science
These ideas come from crystal tradition rather than scientific evidence, and crystals are not a substitute for medical care. Many people simply find that a few quiet minutes with a beautiful crystal helps them slow down and set an intention.
