Pink amethyst and rose quartz are both forms of quartz, and both are loved for their gentle pink colour. But side by side they look completely different. Rose quartz is a smooth, solid, cloudy pink stone. Pink amethyst grows as sparkling crystals inside a geode. Here is how to tell them apart, and why pink amethyst has become one of the most sought-after pink crystals.

What is pink amethyst?
Pink amethyst is a pink to lilac form of amethyst that grows inside geodes. When the geode is opened, the hollow is lined with countless tiny crystal points that catch the light, often with bands of agate, clear quartz crests or darker pockets that add depth. Because it forms in geodes, it is usually sold as open geodes, cut-base pieces that stand on their own, polished spheres with a crystal cavity, and slabs. Pink amethyst has become far more widely available over the past decade, and many of the finest pieces come from Brazil.
What is rose quartz?
Rose quartz is massive quartz, meaning it forms as solid pink stone rather than as visible crystals. It is cut and polished into smooth shapes such as tumbled stones, hearts and spheres, and has been a familiar crystal for centuries. Its colour is soft and even, and good pieces have a gentle glow.
How to tell them apart
- Look for crystals. If you can see sparkling points or druzy, it is pink amethyst. Rose quartz is smooth and solid all the way through.
- Look at the shape. A geode, a cavity or a crystal-lined opening means pink amethyst.
- Look at the colour. Pink amethyst often shifts between blush, peach and lilac. Rose quartz is a more uniform, milky pink.
Why choose pink amethyst?
- Sparkle. Thousands of tiny crystal faces glitter as the light moves, so a pink amethyst geode looks different through the day.
- Every piece is one of a kind. No two geodes have the same pattern of crystals, banding and cavities, so the piece you choose is truly yours.
- A natural display piece. Cut-base geodes and geode spheres stand on their own and work on a desk, shelf, bedside table or mantelpiece.
- A gentle colour that suits any room. Soft blush and lilac tones sit beautifully with neutral, white and natural-wood interiors.
- A thoughtful gift. Small pink amethyst pieces make a memorable present for birthdays, anniversaries and new homes.
Rose quartz is a lovely, affordable stone, especially as tumbled stones or hearts. But if you want a crystal that sparkles, has natural structure, and feels like a real specimen rather than a polished shape, pink amethyst is hard to beat.
Traditional meanings
In crystal tradition, both stones are linked with love. Pink amethyst is traditionally associated with love, compassion and calm, combining the gentle qualities linked with pink stones with the calm long associated with amethyst. Rose quartz is traditionally associated with love, self-care and emotional balance. These meanings reflect long-standing belief rather than proven effects.
Caring for pink amethyst
Dust gently with a soft, dry brush, especially around the crystal points. Keep your piece out of strong, prolonged direct sunlight, as amethyst colour can fade over time, and avoid harsh cleaning products.
